Today's Topic is on "Just Joking La"
Situation A:Me: Why you always like to hang out with your friends more than mee? *hurt face*Boyfriend: Where got? Oi. You don't like that hor.Me: *Smiles* Just Joking la.Situation B:Friend A: Eh, your dress very ugly leh.Friend B: Huh? Really uh? How? How? I go home change?Friend A: No la. Just joking la. Don't waste time already.
The two situations as illustrated above are real by the way.
I don't know about you but I always think that behind every "just joking la" (otherwise known as just joking) there always lies a painful truth.
For example, in situation A... Although I appear to be joking, I really do feel kind of hurt. I mean I know it's always better to speak the truth, but better is not easier and better kind of hurts relationships. If I were to say that yes, I am hurt because you don't like to hang out with me, we might have quarreled. And I, for one, hate quarreling and for a matter of fact, has never quarreled with the boyfriend before. This is probably due to all the "just joking"s that we have exchanged in the midst of our relationship.
We could probably be the advocators of "just joking".
And then in situation B, we see "just joking" being used in another context. As a white lie that could put your friend in a precarious situation. I mean come on, if you already know that what she's wearing is going to make her look like a fashion disaster, then why don't you let her change out of it? I mean doesn't that reflect better on you as well? Imagine going out with a fashion disaster! *shudders*
This post seems to be going nowhere. But my point is that we should all be aware of the term "just joking" because it's never just a joke... If people around you have the guts to say things that can potentially hurt you, they must never have meant it as a joke. The words "Just joking" only serves as a play-down so that even if you're hurt, you're never too hurt. But people never realize that they are only doing the situation more injustice.
Toodles.

I concur, "just joking" is a bad excuse for someone who just wants to shrug off something stupid that they said or did. I was in a hurry to get somewhere one day and my friend kept jumping in front of me, I was so irritated and told them to stop but they didn't so I yelled at them. Their response? Just kidding! But it's so stupid coz it's not funny, right? I wasn't laughing and obviously I said I needed to hurry so why did they bother playing around like that? Argh! >___< When I think about it, it makes me angry again!
