But, a quick chat with a friend immediately made me realize how we were all slaves to the education system of Singapore. Everyone seems to have the misconception that to excel in life, you need good grades, you need sheets of paper called Qualifications and you are mainly judged by the amount of grades you can produce.
It's quite sad really that people seem to think this way. Do you think that in the future, when you go out to work... Your bosses are really going to set expectations of you based on your grades?
Like oh Vilvian, you had an A for your Communication Skills in Poly. So I expect you to score this customer because you're so good in communicating with others!!
I mean come on! We seem to mix up the harsh reality of the working world with school grades/work.
It's so sad because it makes me feel like people have this thinking that you're not going to excel in life once you fail in your studies. There are so many fields of work that doesn't require you to know your sciences and your maths. It doesn't mean that just because you can't do science, you can't do Marketing either. I flunked Science back in Secondary School but it doesn't mean that I am going to fail Marketing right now. Because guess what? I don't use as much science in Marketing. And there are so many entrepreneurs out there without any qualifications.
It really doesn't mean that because you have no qualifications, you cannot excel in life. You still can. But you'll probably have to work harder. Education is probably the easier way out, except for someone stuck so deep in the realms of education, I don't think you'd be accustomed to the harsh working life. Because trust me, working is so different from studying. No one gives way to you anymore.
And you can't choose your group members (colleagues), nor your group leaders (bosses). In life, there really isn't so much choices like in school. You can't choose your meeting times, you can't choose who's going to be in charge of you and of course you can't choose who you can work with. So I say, why not get used to it now? Get yourself steeled against the harshness of the working world first. It will suck when you only realize years later about how stupid and foolish you were to only be concentrating on getting good grades.
Good grades is only going to get you so far in life. Experience will get you further. In fact, experience is what makes normal people exceptional.
Toodles.
